Thibodeau Benefit Fund Raiser to be Held May 2 at the Knights of Columbus
Patrick Thibodeau, the team manager for the Greely High boys basketball squad is a senior who has Down's Syndrome. He also is Mt Ararat basketball star Tegan Talbot's cousin. Patrick practices with his team, but had never played in a real game. On Senior night he made his first appearance and he made the most of it. Watch the video.
Patrick made sure his opportunity counted, scoring a 3-pointer on his second shot. Then, with one minute left in the game, the fans stood and chanted Patrick's name. The coach put him back in the game and he delivered — sinking another three-pointer at the buzzer. Patrick's teammates swarmed around him, and carried him off the court.
Patrick's father, Perry, suffered a debilitating stroke shortly before the game and was released from the hospital the day before in order to see his son play. "Hey, I've always said it: Patrick Thibodeau is going to get his points; you just have to make sure you stop everyone else."
Patrick was also honored recently at the Maine McDonald's All-Star Basketball Banquet. The Spirit of the Game award was given to two all-stars, Patrick Thibodeau of Greely High School and Josh Titus from Edward Little High School. Both boys not only served as managers for their teams, but played in their teams' final home games of the season. Josh, who suffers from Autism, came into his game and scored 9 points. Patrick, a student with Downs Syndrome, started for the Rangers and hit two three pointers.
A benefit dinner dance and a silent auction will be held on May 2 at the Brunswick Knights of Columbus starting at 5:30 to help offset the costs of losing an income while Patrick's dad recovers. Come meet this remarkable young man and help a worthy cause. For more information about the event, call Kim Talbot at (207) 725-5150 or e-mail thibodeaubenefit@yahoo.com.
