Number one seed Cony remained undefeated (17-0) as they defeated the Eagles in the quarterfinals 9-0. Meghan Carr and Brooke Graffam pitched well for the Eagles. Overall, it was a very satisfying season for the Eagles and the future looks bright for the Eagles.
The Eagles bested Leavitt in the first round of the playoffs behind the steady pitching of Meghan Carr, timely hitting up and down the lineup, and some spectacular defensive plays in the late innings. The game started to shape up as a pitchers duel as both Carr and the Hornets' hurler posted zeros thru the first two innings. In the bottom of the third, Leavitt got itself in trouble with some wildness and defensive lapses. Meghan Carr was up with the bases loaded and she blooped a single beyond second base to drive in the first run. Kaylee Kowalczyk then lined a frozen rope to right that cleared the bases for a 4-0 Eagle lead.
Leavitt responded with two runs in the top of the fourth and added another in the top of the fifth. The inning ended when shortstop Miranda Riendeau snagged a grounder deep in the hole and rifled a bullet to Tess Hitchcock, whose stretch used every inch of her 5'10" height, to nip the Leavit baserunner in a bang-bang play at first.
Lauren Vachon led off the bottom of the fifth with a solid single to left. Brooke Graffam legged out an infield hit and a Meghan Carr bunt single loaded the bases for hard-hitting Miranda Riendeau. A wild pitch brought home one run, but it also opened up first base and the crowd groaned as it expected a walk to Riendeau. Leavitt then started to complete the intentional walk, but with a 3-0 count, the Leavitt pitcher through one down the middle and Riendeau made her pay with two-run double. Tess Hitchcock then drilled a single to center for another run and a wild pitch yielded the final run of a five run inning.
The Eagles defense then went into gear with several great defensive plays. Shana Williams made two nice catches in left including a nice running catch. In the final inning, Brooke Graffam barehanded a do or die nubber down the third base line and fired to the master of the stretch at first, Tess Hitchcock, for the out. Lauren Vachon used her gazelle like speed in center to haul down a long fly ball that was heading for the gap.
It was the first Eagles playoff win in a long time. Some said 1987. The Eagles' winning formula is what coach Bartlett has been preaching all year. Good defense, good pitching, and timely hitting. The Eagles won't have long to savor their victory as they head to Cony tomorrow for round 2. Cony beat the Eagles twice during the regular season in two close games. This is a very winable game for the Eagles.

Against Leavitt, Miranda Riendeau supplied all the offense the Eagles would need as she powered another home run that followed a Brook Graffam single. Meghan Carr allowed only two hits and walked no one.
Coach Rick Bartlett said at the beginning of the season that he wanted to emphasize defense and fundamentals. His philosophy is starting to pay off as the Girls reeled off their 4th straight victory. Meghan Carr once again supplied a solid pitching effort as she has all year long. The Eagles stayed away from errors and scored runs when they needed them.
After the lumber slumber the Eagles softball team has been fighting through, the 11-5 victory over Lewiston was like a day at the beach. Kaylee Kowalcyzk led the hit parade with four hits, Miranda Riendeau had three hits including two triples, and Lisa Rogers had three hits. Brooke Graffam, Meghan Carr, and Tess Hitchcock all had two hits each. On the mound, Carr took advantage of the scoring largesse and pitched a complete game victory scattering eight hits and striking out eight.
In a well pitched game by both sides, the Eagles persevered to win in extra innings on a walk-off single by Lisa Rogers. Rogers singled up the middle in the bottom of the eighth with the bases loaded and two out to put the Eagles back in the win column after five sucessive losses.
The Eagles scored their first run by playing small ball and being patient at the plate. Kaylee Kowalcyzk led off with a single, advanced to second on a walk, and to third on a Liz Andreassen two-out bunt single. Lauren Vachon then patiently worked the count full before walking to force in the game's first run. Brunswick tied it in the top of the seventh and threatened in the eighth, but Meghan Carr, who pitched brilliantly all afternoon, bore down to get the last two hitters and preserve the victory for the Eagles.
A struggling Eagles offense ran into some more quality pitching as the Eagles dropped a 6-0 decision to the Oxford Hills. The Vikings' Meagan Gauger was carrying a no hitter into the seventh inning before Miranda Riendeau broke it up with a triple. The Eagles were unable to score and suffered their fifth consecutive loss, th last four of have been by shutout. Meghan Carr pitched well for the Eagles.
The Eagles dropped their fourth straight game, including the last three by shut outs. Pitcher Meghan Carr again kept the Eagles in the game pitching four strong innings before giving up 4 runs in the fifth. Miranda Riendeau led the Eagles offensively with two doubles and Katie Kowalcyzk added the only other Mt Ararat hit. Cony remains unefeated with an 8-0 record.
The Eagles suffered their second straight shutout and another well-pitched game by Meghan Carr went for naught as Bangor scored four unearned runs on route to a 5-0 victory.
The Girls softballteam was shut out 3-0 by Edward Little. This was another fast moving pitchers duel that featured few walks and solid defense on both sides. Offensively, the Eagles couldn't catch a break. They had several well-hit balls that that were right at Eddie fielders. Meghan Carr picked up the tough luck loss, despite pitching very well.
In a see-saw game, Leavitt scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth to beat the Eagles 5-4. Slugging Miranda Riendeau got the Eagles on the score board early with a first inning homer that brought home Kaylee Kowalcyzk and Tess Hitchcock, who both had singled. Riendeau later added a single and a double. After the Hornets scored 4 unanswered runs, Lauren Vachon walked in the seventh inning and came all the way around to score after she advanced on a wild pitch and an even more wild throw. The Hornets eeked out a run in the bottom of the ninth for the win. This was a well pitched game on both sides. Meghan Carr went the distance striking nine while walking only one.
Morse jumped out to 4-0 lead in the first two innings before the Eagles shut down the Shipbuilder's offense and chipped away at the lead. The Eagles attack featured three triples (by Brooke Graffam, Lisa Rogers, and Kaylee Kowalcyzk) to power their way back to a 4-4 tie after four innings. The next three innings were scoreless before Kowalcyzk delivered her game winning hit. Meghan Carr pitched four scoreless innings in relief to pick up her third victory of the season.
Brooke Graffam batted and pitched the Eagles to their second straight victory. Graffam had four hits in the game including two doubles, scored two runs, had two RBIs, and pitched the final three innings in relief. Meghan Carr picked up the win, pitching four innings while allowing only one run, striking out seven and, most imporantly, walking only one. Lisa Rogers had two doubles and three RBIs and Kaylee Kowalcyzk had two hits, including a double, and four RBIs. Lauren Vachon continued her hot hitting with two singles.
The Eagles won their first game of the young season, defeating Brunswick 8-1. The Eagles wasted no time as they scored two runs in the first inning keyed by table-setting singles by Miranda Riendeau and Tess Hitchcock and a clutch single by Kaylee Kowalzcyzk that drove in two runs. In the second, the Eagles played small ball as they parlayed a Lauren Vachon single, an error, and a sacrifice fly by Miranda Riendeau into two more runs to take a 4-0 lead. In the fourth, a Lauren Vachon triple scored Amber Wallace, who had singled. Then Miranda Riendeau absolutely chrushed a long homer into a stiff wind to up the lead to 7-1. Brooke Graffam scored the final run in the sixth as she moved around the bases after reaching on a single. Meghan Carr pitched a complete game, walking only two, while allowing eight hits. The Eagles defense was solid throughout the game.
Miranda Riendeau slugged a home run to tie the game at one in the top of the fourth, but Cony rallied for three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-1 lead. The remainder of the game was scoreless. Meghan Carr pitched well for the Eagles.
Mt Ararat scored two runs in the first highlighted by a Miranda Riendeau triple, but could not hold on as Oxford Hills rallied for three runs in the second and added four more in the sixth en route to a 9-2 Viking victory.
