Messalonskee Hangs on for 7-6 Victory

Lacrosse is an exciting game to watch and this game was nothing if not exciting. There were lead changes, back and forth goal scoring, good goal tending, some big hits, and a last minute comeback attempt. Unfortunately, the Eagles came up short.

The opening quarter was all Mt Ararat. The Eagles controlled play in the Messalonskee end and seemingly were firing away at will on the Messalonskee goalie. Despite the territorial edge and number of shots, the Eagles weren't able to score until Dylan Bousquet-Smith lit the lamp with 5:30 left and then again 40 seconds later to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead. At that point in the game, it looked like it might turn into a romp. But Messalonskee came alive in the last 1:30 when the Eagles were a man down as they rattled off four shots in rapid succesion including one that rang off the post.

Messalonskee carried over the momentum from the first quarter, and battled back to score two goals to tie the score at 2-2. Eagles goalie Dan Toth made two huge saves in the closing minutes of the half to keep the Eagles in the game.

Messalonskee scored first in the second half, but Will Bouchard stole a clearing pass and waltzed in unescorted on the Messalonskee goalie and fired a laser to tie the score at 3. Toth made another fine save and initiated a fast break clear, but the ball was mishandled at midfield and Messalonskee set up camp in the Eagles end. After some excellent ball movement, Messalonskee got the shot they wanted and it beat Toth to make the score 4-3. But Will Bouchard scored his second goal of the game a minute and a half later to tie the game 4-4. Messalonskee came right back to regain the lead with a goal with 2;28 left in the third and that's how the quarter ended.

Ninety seconds into the final period, Dan Toth made another big save for the Eagles. But Messalonskee was gradually taking control of the game. Near the 8 minute mark Messalonkee upped the lead to 6-4 and a minute later made it 7-4 with just under seven minutes left. It was getting to be crunch time for the Eagles. And they responded with a goal to make it 7-5. Then, with 4:31 left Will Bouchard brought the Eagles to within one 7-6. A minute later, Toth made another huge save to keep the Eagles' hopes alive. The Eagles pressured and let go with a flurry of shots including one that clanged off the post with 1:35 left. But the Messalonskee defense Held and the Eagles lost their second game of the season.

Dan Toth was tremendous in the goal for the Eagles. The difference in this game was the ball movement and shot selection by Messalonskee versus the reliance on one-on-one play by the Eagles.

Eagles Fall to Brunswick 11-4

It was an early season meeting of two unbeaten teams that just happen to be crosstown rivals. Brunswick has been a force in lacrosse the past several years, while the Eagles have been quietly and efficiently building their program. Tonight's game was a preview of where the two teams stood. Brunswick won the opening face off and had a good scoring chance 22 seconds into the game, but Eagle goalie Dan Toth made a nice save in close. Play was confined mostly to the midfield until Brunswick was penalized at the 8:30 marker. The Eagles worked the perimeter until Will Bouchard maneuvered in close and let go with a rocket that the Brunswick goalie smothered. About a minute later, a Brunswick middie hit a cutter in close who scored the game's first goal. About two minutes later, with the Eagles a man down, Brunswick added another goal. With 2:32 left in the quarter Brunswick took advantage of an unsettled ball on a clear to up the score to 3-0. Just when it looked as if Brunswick might dominate, Mike Rinaldi waltzed right down Broadway and lasered a shot past the Brunswick goalie. 3-1 Dragons at the end of the quarter.

The Dragons began to control the play in the second quarter as their defense was fundamentaly sound and they were able to stifle any further Eagle penetration. They added three goals of their own to up the score to 6-1 at the half.

The Eagles came out fired up for the second half. Dylan Bousquet-Smith started things off with a goal and Nick Parsons followed with a goal three minutes later to close the gap to 6-3.
